Northland Regional Council’s role is to care for and protect Taitokerau Northland's environment and communities. Does that resonate with you?

Ko te aha ā mātou mahi?  / What work do we do?

We’re focused on creating a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities - matching our skills and resources with the vision and aspirations of our people. Our mahi involves working in partnership with tāngata whenua and our communities to protect and care for our waters, land, air and native life, while building our region’s resilience and adapting to a changing climate. When you join us, you’re part of something bigger- helping Taitokerau thrive for generations to come.

Toitū te whenua, toitū te moana, toitū te tangata. If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people will thrive.

Te āheinga / The opportunity

Help protect Te Taitokerau’s waterways and inspire others to do the same.

Join us as a Check, Clean, Dry (CCD) Ambassador and play a hands-on role in protecting Northland’s lakes and rivers from invasive aquatic pests. This fixed-term position runs through to June 2027 and offers 18 hours per week, with flexibility required to work some weekends and public holidays.

As a CCD Ambassador, you'll be out in the community starting conversations, raising awareness, and encouraging people to take simple actions that make a real difference. From connecting with boaties and jet ski users at Lakes such as Taharoa and Kai Iwi, to supporting educational displays at community events and schools, you'll help build understanding of the importance of freshwater biosecurity.

You'll be part of a collaborative team working alongside partners including Te Roroa, Te Kuihi, KDC, and DOC at the Lake Taharoa biosecurity checkpoint. Day to day, you'll inspect watercraft, support watercraft washdowns, engage with visitors, and help ensure biosecurity requirements are understood and followed. Every interaction is an opportunity to protect some of Te Taitokerau's most treasured freshwater environments.

If you enjoy meeting people, love being outdoors, and are passionate about protecting the environment, this is a unique opportunity to make a visible and meaningful impact in your community.

He kōrero mōu / About you

We’re seeking a confident communicator with a passion for freshwater conservation and biosecurity, who thrives in public-facing roles and community engagement. A relevant science or biosecurity qualification would be a bonus but not essential. You will have a current full driver’s licence and have the flexibility to travel across Taitokerau—including weekends and public holidays. A current first aid certificate would be an advantage, but training can be provided.
