Te āheinga / The opportunity

Join our Climate and Natural Hazards team as a Natural Hazards Analyst in a meaningful fixed-term role through to 30 June 2027, working 25 hours per week based in our Whangārei Office. This position sits at the intersection of science, data, and community, where you’ll play a key role in helping people across Taitokerau better understand natural hazard risks. From interpreting flood models and GIS data to responding to public enquiries, you’ll turn complex technical information into clear, practical insights that support informed decision-making.

In this role, you’ll engage with a wide range of stakeholders - from members of the public to internal teams and partner agencies - providing accurate, well-reasoned guidance on hazards such as storms, flooding, coastal inundation and erosion, landslides, drought, and wildfire. You’ll prepare tailored responses including maps, summary information, and written advice, carefully explaining assumptions, limitations, and uncertainty in hazard data. Drawing on your understanding of climate change impacts, you’ll ensure information is both technically sound and accessible to non-technical audiences, while using your judgement to escalate more complex or sensitive enquiries where needed.

Working collaboratively within the Climate and Natural Hazards team and alongside Rivers and other council teams, you’ll help build strong relationships internally and externally to support coordinated responses. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys translating data into meaningful outcomes, thrives on clear communication, and wants to contribute to safer, more resilient communities across Northland.
