Te āheinga / The opportunity
As an Environmental Monitoring Officer – Water & Waste based out of our Whangārei office, you’ll help protect Northland’s environment by monitoring activities that affect our land and waterways. You’ll carry out site inspections, collect samples, investigate environmental incidents, and ensure compliance with the Resource Management Act and regional rules. The role includes responding to after‑hours incidents, taking enforcement action when required, and contributing evidence to formal proceedings.
You’ll work closely with consent holders and resource users, supporting them to understand their responsibilities and improve environmental performance. Strong data quality and accurate reporting are essential, and you’ll follow established quality assurance processes to maintain high standards.

He kōrero mōu / About you
We are looking for someone who can bring the following skills, knowledge, personal qualities and experience to our diverse team:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (i.e. a science-based discipline)
- Sound knowledge of Regional Council Resource Management Act monitoring functions
- Previous experience in the implementation of environmental monitoring programmes
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft systems e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook
- Proficient in the use of databases
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Ability to handle confidential or controversial information with discretion and professionalism
- Ability to cope effectively with enforcement situations
- Current full driver’s licence
